Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) is the first State-owned and technical university of Nepal, established in accordance with the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) Bill enacted by the Parliament in 2010. The constituent campuses of Tribhuvan University, Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (IAAS) and the Forestry Campus (Institute of Forestry-IOF) in Hetauda, together with Dean’s Office IAAS Rampur were merged, and AFU was established in Rampur, Chitwan. The university aims to produce highly skilled human resources required to promote education, research and development in agriculture, livestock, veterinary science, fisheries, forestry and allied disciplines. Similarly, it aims to contribute to all-round development of agriculture, livestock and forestry in order to raise the socio-economic conditions of rural people through quality teaching, research and extension. The university offers academic programs from bachelor to PhD level from different faculties and colleges. The faculty members of the university are also involved in research and development activities focusing on various issues related to agriculture and allied disciplines. The postgraduate students are contributing thesis and dissertation research to generate knowledge and technologies that address issues important to the nation’s agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and forestry sectors. The university has been following the tripartite mission (consisting of teaching, research and extension) under Land Grant Model. This Strategic Plan is proposed in order to provide the AFU with a forward-looking roadmap for the future, a future which includes society-serving research and extension functions.
The strategic planning process was initiated by the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) with a view to prepare its First Strategic Plan for the period 2013 – 2023 in the year 2012. This Second Strategy Plan 2023-2032 is an outcome of the rigorous exercise that comprised comprehensive review of the pertinent documents and numerous rounds of consultations with strategic partners, and organization of workshops that engaged national as well as international stakeholders. Near to the end of the first strategic planning period of the university, the second strategic planning procedures began to prepare this document. This strategy plan was prepared in technical support of different internal and external stakeholders at different stages of preparation. The plan presents the vision, mission, goals, objectives, strategic objectives and possible actions to accomplish the strategic objectives of the university. The Strategic Plan is the comprehensive phase-wise implementation plan for the university covering ten years planning period with special focus in teaching, research, extension, support activities, welfare services, digitalization and other aspects including sustainability. The Strategic Plan also provides some key directions for the AFU to pursue its integrated program of tripartite function in a systematic manner based on experience from the evaluation of the first Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan has also taken into consideration the national higher education policy and other related acts and rules; and Agriculture Development Strategy of the Country. The plan also offers a general frame of reference for mobilizing the University’s diverse human and physical capital in a rational manner for coming ten years.
